Newsblast # 3

Remember Dr. J-dot Asthana, the Dean who was pitted against Munnabhai in his first outing? The person who used laughter therapy?

Now remember the (I think nameless) Principle of the college where Maj. Ram Prasad Sharma studied? The person who always mixed up his rank, and never understood his "mission" was secret?

Now read this line from (otherwise unexpectedly decent) feature on Boman Irani on Rediff, "Boman plays a similar role in Main Hoon Na, that of the principal of a college. Or at least we think it is similar, until the actor reveals his spin on the character."

And please somebody explain to me apart from the fact that the actor playing those characters is same, what is "similarity" in those two characters?

@Keshi: You need deep bollywood knowledge for that, sorry...
In short, one character is a very serious dean of a medical college, who does everything in his power to get Munnabhai thrown out of college.
The other is a very absent-minded principal of a college, who forgets that Shahrukh (Maj Sharma) is there on a secret mission and forgets that he is a major and keeps calling him by every other rank.

I think what the author meant by similar roles here, is that of playing the role of college principal and both the roles were funny.

Btw, just to tell you at last I could see Munnabhai last week. ;)

@Cuckoo: That's like saying Aishwarya Rai's role in Mohabbatein and Ava Mukherjee's role in Darna Zaroori Hai is similar because they both play serious roles of ghosts ;)
And finally you saw Munnabhai... how did you find it?

@Nikichan: Is he? Hmm...

so?

the roles were poles apart..
if u say that thet were comic, then too... the basic character of asthana is that of a disciplinarian and the humour comes when he is not able to "let the steam off" , as is written in the article..
In main hoon na.. there was an attempt to be funny - I felt that..

but the article was useful for the acting tips for the big punjabi production coming soon..(LJ diyan mysterian)

@Keshi: I guess Sid answered your question. My point is, the roles are poles apart, and only somebody who has seen the IMDB or wikipedia page of the movies without watching them can make such a statement. Which fits perfectly, given that the reporter hasn't seen Lage Raho Munnabhai yet...

@Sid: My point exactly...
And why do you think I am haunting the movie pages of Rediff and Indiatimes recently? Got 2 movies to direct man...
Let's start writing the story, shall we?

@fleiger.
ya.. lets get on to the story provided LJ gives some insights into the mysteries of her life ..;)

vaise i believe you once wrote a story.. i guess i have read one chapter of that long time back..and it was to be continued or something..
what happened to that..

SiD said...

@fleiger.. got the link to the stories on the main blog...

read the seventh day..
it was a normal discussion btw people.. yet it was so absorbing that I was totally immersed in it..

i mean, i really cant find why i liked it... but i did..
hats off to you sir!!!

Amey said...

@Sid: Thanks... Romeo and Juliet is one of my most recent efforts, while The Seventh Day was written in second year of my engineering. It contains a lot of inside jokes for me and my best friends, and is about a topic which I love to write on.
Which effectively means that I am losing whatever touch I had... and that's why I guess we should have you working on cuckoo's story ;)

so why cant roles be poles apart? After all they r 2 different movies arent they?

Keshi.

@Keshi: That's the point... the roles are pole apart, and the person who wrote the article is saying that he thought the roles are very similar till he heard the actor's thoughts on the roles...
